St. James is a friendly congregation of an open evangelical persuasion. Worship is varied, recognisably Anglican, warm and informal. Lay participation is high (meaning it's not always the vicar or another ordained person leading the service or social activity) and there is a faith and fellowship group on a Monday morning in the Upper Room of the Church Hall/Arts Centre.
St. James is keen to reach out and be a servant to the surrounding community, and this is expressed particularly through our Community Arts Centre project. We can also offer 4 spaces to hire for various activities.
In the 'Undercroft' we have a multi-functional workshop including a kiln and a gallery which are available for exhibitions.
The church building itself is a rare example of a Paley and Austin design east of the Pennines. The stained glass by Shrigley and Hunt includes some excellent pieces.
Our vicar is the Reverend Elspeth Cansdale [email protected] Mobile- 07828 871080
Our office administrator is Jan Brittain (09.30 - 11.30 on Tuesday, Wednesday & Thursday )(01723) 341466[email protected]
