Brockhampton Chapel lies in the grounds of the Brockhampton Estate at the top of the estate near the National Trust’s welcome kiosk. Whilst the chapel is on the National Trust’s site, it is not in the National Trust’s ownership and is cared for by a small group of enthusiastic volunteers. At present, the chapel is on Historic England’s Heritage at Risk Register and is in need of significant repairs. We want to preserve this interesting building for future generations and donations towards the repairs are gratefully received.
The chapel was built in early gothic style at the turn of the 19th century at the expense of John Barneby, who owned the estate, to replace a small Norman church at Lower Brockhampton. The church is attributed to George Byfield, although it has been suggested that John Nash (architect to the Prince Regent, later King George IV) and not Byfield designed the Chapel, even though Byfield exhibited drawings at the Royal Academy of Arts in 1799.
Glass for the east window was made by William Raphael Eginton of Birmingham. New stained-glass windows and a reredos were made in the period 1888-1891 by Powell's of London, to designs by Mary Lowndes and Ada Currey. The chapel is one of the earliest Gothic-revival churches in Herefordshire and retains many of its interior fittings, including gallery, pews, and pulpit, that give the interior its authentic early 19th century character.
The chapel is a ‘peculiar’, which means that it does not fit into the general scheme of jurisdiction within the Church of England so it does not belong to a parish, although the congregation does receive ministry from nearby Bromyard.
Evensong services are held on the fourth Sunday of the month at 3.00 pm and Holy Communion at Easter, Pentecost and Christmas day at 9.00 am. You can find out more about the history of the chapel here: https://historicengland.org.uk/listing/the-list/list-entry/1349630
